Pelicans, A Haiku

Not just pelicans
Shellfish, whales, and dolphins drown—
Hope, too, drowns in oil.

I like this haiku. Enjoyed it on Dave's blog too.

Oh dear Dan ...I'm so sorry for your disaster which of course spills over onto all of us ..the whole world grieves with you.

That pelican looks so like the ones here on the east coast near me ...might be one of those since it's a kookaburra photo!

Funnily enough my daughter bought me a pelican fridge magnet today ..as a sign of me moving to the coast within the year ... it will be wonderful for me to be near her and back to my roots. xx

Hi, Kass--

Thank you! I had my reservations about posting it because it's a bit blue, but to tell the truth, I DO feel pretty blue about the loss of so much life (most of it non-human, of course) and also about the sort of responses I've seen so far.

Finger-pointing and grousing about how much BP owes whom feels very much beside the larger point about the consumption/greed that underlies our whole consumerist society.

Yes, it's an Aussie pelican, and I chose it not because it's from the Gulf of Mexico, but as a nod to my bloggy friends down under. Good eye, Sarah Lulu!
